The microbiome of aquaculture species comprises a highly diverse and complex assembly of viruses, archaea, bacteria and fungi which varies between strains, diets, environments and with medicinal treatments.
The abundance and biodiversity of the organisms comprising the microbiome has been shown to have a major impact on digestion, growth, immune function and on susceptibility to infection by pathogens.
Applications of microbiome analysis include testing the efficacy of novel feeds containing ingredients (e.g. fibre, butyrate and probiotics) which are designed to boost the abundance and diversity of microbial communities associated with key organs such as the skin and gastrointestinal tract. It can also be used as tool for integrated health and welfare management.
Xelect provides a complete microbiome analysis service from tissue sample to report based on 16S V3 + V4 region amplicon sequencing.
The service comprises purification of gDNA and library preparation including full quality control, Pico green quantification, library normalisation and blocking contaminating 16 sequences from the host’s genome, plastid and mitochondria. Amplicon sequencing is on an Illumina MiSeq or HiSeq 2500 platform.
Bioinformatic analyses incudes OUT clustering taxonomic classification using the GreenGene database, estimation of alpha and beta diversity and statistical analyses appropriate to the trial.
